New York style Salsa is danced on the second beat of the music ("on 2"), and the follower steps forward on the first measure of the music. The etiquette of New York Style is strict about remaining in the close dance space with a lot of spins, turns and styling. There is greater emphasis on performing "shines" in which dancers dance solo with intricate footwork and styling. Students are tested on footwork, timing, shines, turns etc at the salsa exam held by Montana Dance & Art Centre on 1 & 2 Oct 2016. We have Incorporated styling techniques such as shimmies, leg work, arm work, body movement, spins, body isolations, shoulder shimmies, rolls, even hand styling, acrobatics and lifts into our salsa dancing and students learn from one grade to another.
It's a Latin American dance styles originate from Puerto Rico, Cuba and surrounding Caribbean islands.
